Thierry of Chartres’ Cosmogony and the Stoic Creative Fire
Thierry of Chartres was a prominent figure of the 12th century philosophy and theology. Among other topics, he was interested in cosmology and cosmogony, and himself contributed to the long tradition of hexaemeral literature – a genre of literature dealing with the creation of the world, mostly based on the first chapter of Genesis. In his treatise De sex dierum operibus, Thierry tries to harmonize the biblical depiction of the act of creation with ancient natural philosophy and the Platonic view of the cosmos. However, I argue that not only Platonic and Neoplatonic ideas are present in Thierry’s Treatise, but also some aspects of the natural philosophy of the Stoics can be found there. In my talk, I will focus on one such aspect – the element of fire. I will examine the nature and the role of fire in Thierry’s cosmogony and point out in which sense it is similar to the Stoic understanding of creative fire.

The History of Glassmaking
The presentation deals with the history of glassmaking in the Bohemian Forest.  It will briefly introduce the timeline with important milestones for this industrial activity, outline and explain the reasons why this south-western region of Bohemia was such a favourable place for glassmaking and what distinguishes it. It will also explore specific aspects of the life of a glassmaker and outline the contemporary status of this craftsman in the society of the time. Last but not least, it will look at the end and demise of glassmaking in the Bohemian Forest and possible future prospects. The presentation does not aim to cover the technical aspects of glassmaking and glass production, but focuses on the general level of the activity, which is undoubtedly linked not only to the history of the Bohemian Forest region, but also significantly affects the history of the entire border area and, consequently, the entire country.

Plato’s Theory of the Soul in Phaedo
Plato’s „Phaedo“ presents a rich exploration of the nature of the soul and its relationship to the body and the afterlife. In this dialogue, Socrates engages in a series of discussions with his followers, offering various arguments for the immortality of the soul. Through these arguments, Plato presents a complex conception of the soul that is both narrower and broader than our modern concept of the mind. While the soul is attributed certain responsibilities for the life of all living organisms, it is also emphasized that the soul is only responsible for a limited range of activities within the organism. Socrates‘ arguments touch upon the soul’s affinity with intelligible being, its role in animating living organisms, and its separation from the body at death. This presentation will provide an overview of Plato’s key arguments in the Phaedo regarding the nature, immortality, and functions of the soul.
