The History of Glassmaking

The presentation deals with the history of glassmaking in the Bohemian Forest.  It will briefly introduce the timeline with important milestones for this industrial activity, outline and explain the reasons why this south-western region of Bohemia was such a favourable place for glassmaking and what distinguishes it. It will also explore specific aspects of the life of a glassmaker and outline the contemporary status of this craftsman in the society of the time. Last but not least, it will look at the end and demise of glassmaking in the Bohemian Forest and possible future prospects. The presentation does not aim to cover the technical aspects of glassmaking and glass production, but focuses on the general level of the activity, which is undoubtedly linked not only to the history of the Bohemian Forest region, but also significantly affects the history of the entire border area and, consequently, the entire country.
