Department of Philosophy

About Us

University of West Bohemia’s Department of Philosophy provides pedagogical activity and research in the field of philosophy, especially history of philosophy, philosophy of history, philosophical anthropology, epistemology, philosophy and methodology of natural sciences and humanities, logic, philosophy of education, ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of religion and religion studies.

The research activities of our department focus on two research areas. The first consists of the philosophical, theoretical and historical aspects of science (history of science and technology, philosophical study of theoretical and historical dimensions of scientific activity). The second research area are philosophical problems of education in the context of European culture.

The department guarantees the two study programs: 1) Philosophy, 2) Humanities.


In the program of Philosophy the department offers:

1)      Bachelor degree in Philosophy;

2)      Follow-up master degree in Analytic philosophy and philosophy of science.


In the program of Humanities the department offers:

1)      Bachelor degree in Humanities;

2)      Follow-up master degree in European Cultural Studies ;

3)      Follow-up master degree in Theory and Philosophy of Communication;

4)      Ph.D. degree in Theory and History of Science and Technology.


For the students of University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, the department provides the segment of humanities dealing with philosophy and interdisciplinary approach to particular problems. The department also participates in the program of lifelong learning and develops philosophy as an important means of humanization in West Bohemia.
